Why They Exist
A visitor who arrives from a search lands on an inside page with no idea what is above it. The breadcrumb trail says where they are and gives them a one-click way up. It is the oldest navigation idea on the web and still one of the most useful, especially on a phone where the main menu is folded away behind a button.
What It Looks Like
On the page, a line of links separated by a character or an arrow.

In the page's structured data, the same trail as a list, so Google can read it.

What Google Does With Them
With the markup, the green line under a result reads "gableexterior.example › Services › Roof Soft Washing" instead of a bare address. It is one of the quieter rich results, but it tells the searcher what kind of page they are about to open, and it tells Google how the site is organized. On a BizPinPro site every page except the homepage carries the list, generated from the page's own place in the site.

The Foundation Connection
Breadcrumbs belong to Technical Soundness in the Digital Foundation: proper structure that tells search engines how the site fits together, done once in the shared code so no page can be missed.
