What It Is
Linode has rented servers since 2003, longer than most of the companies now called "the cloud." A customer picks a size, a data center and an operating system, and has a machine with its own address and its own disk a minute later. Nobody else is on it. What runs on it is the customer's decision, and so is keeping it patched and backed up.
Why BizPinPro Uses It
Shared hosting puts hundreds of sites on one machine with one address. If a neighbor is hacked or sends spam, every site on the box shares the consequences: the address lands on blocklists, the server slows, the host's response is to do nothing because nothing is technically broken. That is the Indifference Hosting Problem, and it is invisible to the business paying for it.
A Linode server belongs to one operator. BizPinPro runs a small number of them: the web servers that host client sites, the mail server, and the monitoring and backup systems. The IP addresses have a known history, the reverse DNS points where it should, and when something needs changing it gets changed the same day by the person responsible for it.
What It Costs
Less than most people assume. A server that comfortably hosts dozens of small business sites rents for the price of one mid-range shared hosting plan. The expense is not the machine. It is knowing how to run one, which is the part the client is paying for.
The Foundation Connection
Where a site lives is the ground the Digital Foundation stands on. Active Security and Performance Metrics both depend on it: a hardened server with one responsible operator, rather than a shared box where the business is one of many tenants and the landlord is indifferent.
