What is a domain registrar?

Quick Definition
A registrar is the company where a domain name is registered, renewed and transferred, such as Namecheap or GoDaddy. Its records say who owns the domain, when it expires and which nameservers carry its DNS, which makes the registrar account the root of control over everything attached to that name: the website, the email and the security records behind both.

What A Registrar Does

Domain names are sold through accredited registrars, who record each registration with the registry that runs the extension (.com, .net, .org and the rest). The registrar collects the yearly fee, keeps the owner's contact details, sends the renewal reminders, and holds the setting that matters most: which nameservers the domain uses. Hosting, email and DNS management can all be done by other companies, but they sit on top of the registrar account. Whoever controls that account controls the domain.

Registrar, Host And Developer Are Different Jobs

Owners often use one name for all three, because one company sold them a bundle. They are separate roles. The registrar holds the name. The host runs the server the website lives on. The developer builds and maintains the site. A domain can be registered at one company, pointed at nameservers run by a second, and managed day to day by a third, and that arrangement is normal. What is not normal is an owner who cannot say which company holds which job.

Whose Name Is On It

The registrant is the legal owner of the domain, and it should be the business. When a developer or an agency registers a client's domain in its own account, under its own name, the business is renting its identity. A lost login, a billing dispute, a developer who stops answering or a company that closes can take the website and the email with it, and getting a domain back from a registrant who will not cooperate is slow and sometimes impossible. BizPinPro clients are the registered owners of their domains; we manage the records and the domain goes with the client if they ever leave.

What An Owner Should Know

The Foundation Connection

The registrar is where ownership of a Digital Foundation is recorded. Everything else can be rebuilt: a site can be moved, email can be re-pointed, records can be recreated. The name itself cannot be re-bought once someone else has it. That is why the registrar account belongs in the business's hands, shared with whoever manages it, never the other way round.

For business owners

Does Google know what your business is?

Most of the small business sites we open for the first time have the same handful of problems: email that lands in spam, a site that says nothing about where the business is, or a setting that tells Google to stay away. The free check reads your domain and lists what it finds. One box, no account, about a minute.
