Is this just another blog series?
Many of the blogs you see online are written by people who have never gotten their hands dirty and looked at a broken website. They recycle the same advice that has been floating around the internet for ten years, dress it up with stock photos, and call it content marketing.
That is not what this is.
In The Field is a recounting of what I actually find when I audit real small business websites. Every post in this category comes from sites I have looked at for real reasons. Sometimes I was researching a potential client. Sometimes I was following up on a lead. Sometimes I was just curious about a local business I drove past. Every finding is real, and every problem described is sitting on someone’s live website right now.
Theory only goes so far.
I can tell you that WordPress plugin bloat is a problem, that email blacklists cost small businesses real money, and that an abandoned Google Business Profile is invisible to customers. You can read that, agree, and move on with your day.
But now I have built tools to analyze website structure and look for gaps or problems that prevent search engines and AI from seeing what matters.
When I show you the hacked website serving French gambling spam, or the 30-truck carrier whose latest news has been coming soon since December 2019, or the shuttle service whose email domain is on two blacklists at once, the problem stops being abstract. It becomes a specific thing happening to a specific business right now. And that business has no idea.
Every post here will follow the same format: what I found, why it matters, and what should happen next. No names, no identifying details, nothing that could embarrass the business owner. The point is not to name and shame. The point is to show what is actually broken out there so other business owners can recognize themselves in the findings.
Here, I will use myself as an example. Here are the full unedited reports:
Homepage Audit - Since the homepage is generally the first place visitors, search engines and AI look, it is the most important.
================================================================ \nWEBSITE AUDIT REPORT \nBizPinPro · bizpin.pro · contact@bizpin.pro \n© 2026 BizPinPro · Proprietary, for recipient use only \n================================================================ \nURL: https://bizpin.pro \nRequested: 2026-04-20 06:18:04 \n================================================================ \n \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \nAI ANALYSIS SUMMARY \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \n \nHere is your summary. \n \nYour website is in solid shape from a technical standpoint. The page loads extremely fast, the file size is small and efficient, and your security certificate is valid, which means visitors will not see any scary browser warnings when they arrive. We did not detect any broken links, missing tags, or structural problems during the audit. That is a good foundation to have in place. \n \nThe one thing worth noting is that a clean technical audit does not automatically mean the site is working hard for your business. The next step would be to look at things a technical scan cannot measure, like whether your messaging is clear to a first time visitor, whether people can figure out what you do and how to contact you within a few seconds, and whether the site is showing up in search results for the phrases your customers actually type. Those are the areas where most small business websites quietly lose opportunities. \n \nThere is nothing urgent to fix right now on the technical side, so this is actually a good moment to focus on strategy. If your site is not generating leads or calls the way you want, the problem is likely in the content, the offer, or your visibility in search, not in the technology. That would be the priority to dig into next. \n \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \n \n \n--- 1. Sitemap Audit - The sitemap lives on your website, and is used by the search engines to index the different pages:
================================================================ \nSITEMAP ANALYSIS REPORT \nBizPinPro · bizpin.pro · contact@bizpin.pro \n© 2026 BizPinPro · Proprietary, for recipient use only \n================================================================ \n \nSite: https://bizpin.pro \nSitemap: https://bizpin.pro/sitemap.xml \nAudit Mode: SEO Crawl (Sitemap-based) \nDate: April 20, 2026 6:02am \nDuration: 27s \nTotal URLs: 20 \n \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \nANALYSIS SUMMARY \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \n \n## Your Website Health Summary \n \nYour website is in excellent technical shape. Out of the 20 pages on your site, every single one loaded quickly, had no errors, and included all the basic elements that search engines look for. There are no broken pages, no missing titles or descriptions, and no security concerns. This is genuinely rare to see in a crawl report, so whoever built or maintains your site has done a solid job on the fundamentals. \n \nHonestly, there is nothing urgent to fix here. You have zero problems across every category we checked. That said, a clean technical foundation is only one piece of the puzzle. These numbers tell us your site is healthy for search engines to read, but they do not tell us whether your content is compelling, whether you are targeting the right keywords, whether other reputable sites are linking to you, or whether your Google Business Profile is optimized. Those factors matter just as much, if not more, for actually showing up when potential customers search for what you offer. \n \nMy recommendation is simple: since your technical house is in order, shift your focus entirely to content and visibility. Make sure each of those 20 pages has useful, original content that speaks directly to what your customers are searching for. Look into building your local presence through reviews, directory listings, and backlinks from other trusted sites. You have a strong foundation, and now is the time to build on it. \n \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \nSUMMARY COUNTS \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \n \n OK (2xx): 20 \n Redirects (3xx): 0 \n Errors (4xx/5xx): 0 \n Slow (>2s): 0 \n Noindex: 0 \n Bad Canonical: 0 \n Duplicate Titles: 0 \n Duplicate Descs: 0 \n Orphaned Pages: 0 \n Suspect URLs: 0 \n Missing Title: 0 \n Missing Desc: 0 \n Missing H1: 0 \n Multiple H1s: 0 \n \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \nFULL PAGE DETAIL (20 pages) \n---------------------------------------------------------------- \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/ \n Title: BizPinPro | Professional Digital Presence for Small Business \n H1: Your business deserves to be found. \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/aboutus/ \n Title: About BizPinPro | Dwayne, Digital Presence for Small Business \n H1: Built by someone who has been inside the industry. \n Issues: Title long (61 chars) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/ \n Title: Blog | BizPinPro \n H1: The BizPinPro Blog \n Issues: Title short (16 chars) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/beyond-bloat/ \n Title: The Wordpress Trap: Beyond Bloat | BizPinPro \n H1: The Wordpress Trap: Beyond Bloat \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/green-doesnt-mean-go/ \n Title: The WordPress Trap: Green Doesn't Mean Go | BizPinPro \n H1: The WordPress Trap: Green Doesn't Mean Go \n Issues: Description long (165 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/proper-website-architecture-vs-stacking-plugins/ \n Title: Proper Website Architecture vs Stacking Plugins | BizPinPro \n H1: Proper Website Architecture vs Stacking Plugins \n Issues: Description long (171 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/rmis-and-carrier411-the-digital-detectives-you-never-see/ \n Title: RMIS and Carrier411: The Digital Detectives You Never See | BizPinPro \n H1: RMIS and Carrier411: The Digital Detectives You Never See \n Issues: Title long (69 chars) · Description long (172 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/the-digital-ghost-town/ \n Title: The Digital Ghost Town | BizPinPro \n H1: The Digital Ghost Town \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/the-fmcsa-data-trap/ \n Title: The FMCSA Data Trap | BizPinPro \n H1: The FMCSA Data Trap \n Issues: Description long (168 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/the-fmcsa-digital-file/ \n Title: The FMCSA Digital File | BizPinPro \n H1: The FMCSA Digital File \n Issues: Description long (162 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/the-fragility-of-the-dependency-chain/ \n Title: The Wordpress Trap: The Fragility of the Dependency Chain | BizPinPro \n H1: The Wordpress Trap: The Fragility of the Dependency Chain \n Issues: Title long (69 chars) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/the-ghost-in-the-machine/ \n Title: The Ghost in the Machine | BizPinPro \n H1: The Ghost in the Machine \n Issues: Description long (162 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/why-are-my-emails-not-going-through/ \n Title: Why Are My Emails Not Going Through? | BizPinPro \n H1: Why Are My Emails Not Going Through? \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/why-even-big-fleets-are-invisible-online/ \n Title: Why Even Big Fleets Are Invisible Online | BizPinPro \n H1: Why Even Big Fleets Are Invisible Online \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/blog/why-your-email-ends-up-in-the-spam-folder/ \n Title: Why Your Email Ends Up in the Spam Folder | BizPinPro \n H1: Why Your Email Ends Up in the Spam Folder \n Issues: Description long (163 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/check/ \n Title: Free Domain Health Checker | BizPinPro \n H1: Is your domain working for you? \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/contractors/ \n Title: Digital Presence for Contractors | BizPinPro \n H1: YOUR NEXT CUSTOMER IS SEARCHING RIGHT NOW. \n Issues: Description long (168 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/newrivervalley/ \n Title: Digital Presence for New River Valley Small Businesses | BizPinPro \n H1: Your neighbors are searching for businesses like yours. \n Issues: Title long (66 chars) · Description long (168 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/report/ \n Title: Free Digital Checkup | BizPinPro \n H1: Find out where your business stands online. \n \n[200] https://bizpin.pro/trucking/ \n Title: Digital Presence for Trucking Fleets | BizPinPro \n H1: YOU EITHER LOOK LEGIT OR YOU DON'T. \n Issues: Description long (184 chars, may truncate in results) \n \n================================================================ \nEND OF REPORT \nBizPinPro · bizpin.pro · 540-391-0404 \n================================================================ \n
If you are running a small business and you have not looked at your own digital presence in a year or two, some of these posts will feel uncomfortable.
That is the point.
With AI‑driven search reshaping who gets seen, you can no longer treat your website, email, or profile as a “set it and forget it” checkbox.
The first real In The Field post will be released in a few days, and it will look just like the audit you saw above, only for someone else’s business.
