Why They Exist
Google called these rich snippets until 2017, and the old name still turns up in older articles and in tools. Rich results is the current name for the same thing.
A plain search result is three lines. Google would rather answer the question on the results page itself, and a page that states its facts in structured data gives Google the material to do that. The hours under a restaurant, the five questions under an HVAC company, the pay range under a driver opening, the star rating under a shop: none of those are typed into Google. They are read from the page's Schema markup and shown.
The Ones That Matter For A Small Business
- Local business: hours, phone, address and a map pin, from the business node in the markup and the Google Business Profile together.
- FAQ: the questions on a page's FAQ section, expandable right in the result. Google has narrowed who gets these, but the markup still feeds its AI answers.
- Job posting: an opening listed in Google's jobs panel, with an apply button that lands on the site. Recruiting without a job board fee.
- Breadcrumbs: the page's place in the site shown instead of a raw address.
- Reviews and ratings: stars under the listing, when the rating comes from a source Google trusts.
The Rating Trap
The star rating is the rich result everyone wants and the one most often faked. Typing a rating into the markup by hand is against Google's rules and wrong the day the next review lands. BizPinPro never hand-types a rating. It comes from the live Google profile or it is left out, and the listing earns its stars honestly or not at all.
What They Are Not
Rich results are not a ranking boost. The page still has to rank on its own. What they change is what happens once it does: the listing is bigger, answers more, and gets chosen more often than the plain one beside it.
How To Check It
Google's Rich Results Test, with the page address pasted in, reports which rich result types the page qualifies for and what is missing for the ones it does not.
See it on working builds: the heating and air page shows the FAQ markup that feeds answers under a listing, and the trucking page shows the job posting markup that lands an opening in Google's jobs panel.
The Foundation Connection
Rich results are what the Verified Identity layer of the Digital Foundation looks like from the outside. The Schema markup is the work. The rich result is the proof it was done.
