What is JSON-LD?

Quick Definition
JSON-LD is the format Schema markup is written in: a block of structured text in a web page's code that search engines read and visitors never see. It is Google's preferred way to receive structured data, and it keeps the facts about a business in one place instead of scattered through the page.

Why It Exists

Schema is the vocabulary: business, address, hours, services. JSON-LD is the way of writing it down. Before JSON-LD, structured data had to be woven into the visible page as extra attributes on every heading and paragraph, which was fragile and broke whenever the page design changed. JSON-LD puts the whole statement in one block in the head of the page, separate from the layout. Change the design and the block is untouched.

What It Looks Like

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@graph": [
    { "@type": "AutoRepair", "@id": "https://hollowbrookauto.example/#business",
      "name": "Hollowbrook Automotive", "telephone": "+15405550193" },
    { "@type": "WebSite", "@id": "https://hollowbrookauto.example/#website",
      "publisher": { "@id": "https://hollowbrookauto.example/#business" } },
    { "@type": "WebPage", "@id": "https://hollowbrookauto.example/#webpage",
      "isPartOf": { "@id": "https://hollowbrookauto.example/#website" },
      "about": { "@id": "https://hollowbrookauto.example/#business" } }
  ]
}
</script>

The block is a graph: a few named things, the business, the website and the page, each pointing at the others by id. The business node carries the facts. The website and page nodes say what this page is and who publishes it. Every page on the site carries the graph, so each page is a complete statement on its own.

Why The Shape Matters

A single flat object with a business type and a few fields will pass a validator and still say less than it should. The graph form lets Google connect the page to the business to the site, and lets a blog post name the business as its author without repeating the whole description. BizPinPro builds every site to the graph form from the first page, because retrofitting it later means touching every page.

How To Check It

Google's Rich Results Test takes any address and shows what structured data it found and whether it qualifies for anything. The Schema Markup Validator shows whether the block is well formed. A block can pass the second and still fail the first, so both are worth running.

See it on a working build: the auto repair page shows the graph for Hollowbrook Automotive, with the booking action that puts a book button on the profile.

The Foundation Connection

JSON-LD is the carrier for the Verified Identity layer of the Digital Foundation. The facts are the point. JSON-LD is how they get to Google without being guessed at.
