What is a VPS?

Quick Definition
A VPS, virtual private server, is a slice of a physical server that behaves as a machine of its own: its own operating system, its own address, its own disk, with no other customer on it. It is the middle ground between shared hosting, where hundreds of sites share one machine, and renting a whole physical server, and it is what BizPinPro runs client sites on.

The Three Kinds Of Hosting

Shared hosting is one machine, one address, hundreds of customers. It is cheap because the host does nothing for any of them individually. A neighbor who gets hacked or sends spam takes the address, and every site on it, down with them.

A dedicated server is a whole physical machine for one customer. Full control, full cost, and more machine than a small business will ever use.

A VPS is a dedicated server divided by software into independent machines. Each one runs its own system, has its own address and disk, and is isolated from the others. The customer controls it completely and pays for the slice, not the box.

Why It Is The Right Fit

A small business site needs almost no computing power and a great deal of care: the right server software, security patches applied, backups taken, certificates renewed, the mail setup correct. A VPS gives one responsible operator the control to do all of that properly, at a monthly cost close to shared hosting. BizPinPro runs its client sites on a small number of VPS machines at Linode, with one operator, known addresses, nightly backups and monitoring.

What It Asks Of The Operator

Everything. A VPS arrives empty and nobody patches it but the person renting it. That is the trade: control in exchange for responsibility. It is why a VPS is the right answer when someone competent is running it and the wrong one when nobody is.

The Foundation Connection

The server is the ground under the Digital Foundation. Active Security, Performance Metrics and reliable email all depend on a machine one operator controls and maintains, which is what a VPS provides and shared hosting cannot.
